Even though the LDS system has great advantages
when used with prime lenses, it really comes into
its own with a zoom. Aside from the ability to
see all three lens rings (focus, zoom, iris) on
the Lens Data Display when the camera is on a
crane, the graphical depth of field indication
is extremely useful to gauge the depth of field
for different focal lengths as the lens is zoomed.
In addition, Cinematographers, Directors and Script
Supervisors appreciate the fact that all lens
information - including zoom - can be seen on
the video assist. This makes the usual call across
the set "Hey, what zoom setting do we have?" unnecessary,
and makes for a much quieter and peaceful set.
