ARRICAM Down Under

Recently a well traveled ARRI team visited Australia for the Sydney SMPTE 2003 show and to give a special ARRI presentation. The SMPTE show was well attended and we were positively surprised by the enthusiastic response of the local film professionals to the ARRICAM system. Many were impressed by the completeness of the system, and for every question asked at the booth we were able to point out some box that could solve the problem. One customer said "OK, but I bet you cannot do the streaking-timing thing!" When we showed him the Timing Shift Box, he said "I give up. You guys have really thought of EVERYTHING! It's brilliant. "

The Australian film makers were especially curious about the Lite camera, as they already have a Studio camera in Australia since March of 2003, when Marc Edgecombe became the first Australian ARRICAM owner.

Tristan Milani, A.C.S., a local cinematographer who has rented the ARRICAM Studio from Marc Edgecombe, is enthusiastic about the system. "The ARRICAM is better equipped for Australian film making than other cameras, since it has a number of features that are very conducive to working fast. We do not have the big budgets here that they have in LA, so we need to work fast and stay flexible. I especially like the snap-on shoulder set, since it allows me to go from tripod to hand held in no time. Also helpful are its size, weight and balance; I do a lot of hand held, and the camera's hand held balance is particularly beautiful. The ARRICAM gives us greater flexibility with time; it allows us to make decisions quickly and then quickly reconfigure the camera."

A similarly positive response was garnered at the special presentation, which was professionally organized by the local ARRI Agent, Cine Australasia. During the presentation all aspects of ARRI's business were shown. General Manager Franz Kraus started with an overview of ARRI's activities, and then Stefan Kramper, Timo Mueller and Marc Shipman-Mueller filled in the details on ARRI's digital, lighting and camera products respectively. The local professionals were especially curious about the ARRICAM system, and during a lively discussion many questions were answered.

During various customer and set visits we were able to get a better idea of the Australian film market, and the trip was completed by a memorable tour of Sydney and the gorgeous beaches nearby, conducted expertly by Dieter Schmidt, the local Cine Australasia representative. We left impressed by the beauty of the country and the friendliness and enthusiasm of its people.
