Color Management for
ARRILASER
ARRI has developed new Color
Management System to overcome the differences between
the additive color mixing used in monitors and the
subtractive color mixing of film stock.
As an open system, ARRI uses the well established
International Color Consortium (ICC) standard for
device color space profiles. |
|
These profiles are
used to transform the RGB colors into L*a*b*
as a common color space, overlapping all
possible color gamuts. The advantage of
the L*a*b space is that it reflects as accurately
as possible the color and luminance sensation
of the human eye, so that the different
color gamuts can be matched.
|
|
 |
|
|
| A
CMM (Color Management Module) that has been specially
designed for use in the ARRILASER matches
the L*a*b values using a 3D-Look up table. ARRI
will deliver the CMM as well as high quality profiles
for standard |

|
| devices
such as a Sony HD Monitor and Kodak Vision print
stock projected by a xenon lamp. Known ICC profiles
for other devices can be used directly as well.
|
|
With the ARRILASER Interactive Configuration
Editor (ALICE), in the preview mode the results
of the Color Management System can be viewed on
the ARRILASER workstation monitor directly.
By choosing the ICC profile for the workstation
monitor, the changes of the color management can
be rendered and seen via the workstation monitor
profile. The handling of those colors of the monitor
that can not be shown in a film projection can
be judged prior to recording.
|
|
|
The Color Management
System is implemented as an image processing
node. Input profile (monitor) and output
profile (film) can be selected in that node.
The Color Management will be applied to
the images on the fly and the recording
speed of the ARRILASER is not influenced.
On the ARRI booth interested people had
the chance to convince themselves by taking
a look at the results, Sibylle Maier Product
Manager ARRILASER showed different images
in a side-by-side comparison between an
HD-Monitor and a Xenon LocPro film projection.
