Greetings from the latest edition of the ARRI Email Newsletter! With the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show just completed, here are some of the exciting announcements on new products, including our innovative 16 mm camera, the ARRIFLEX 416; Ultra 16 lenses, Master Diopters, the Lightweight Zoom LWZ-1, upgraded features for the ARRISCAN, the automated stirrup MaxMover and the brightest HMI light on the planet - the ARRIMAX 18/12.

 

1. The Power of 416
When many are talking about the great digital trend, some companies have perceived a kind of counter-trend in the last years. 35 mm film is going strong as ever, but ARRI has also seen an increased use of Super 16 mm film. The result is the ARRIFLEX 416, a lightweight modern Super 16 film camera.

2. ARRIFLEX 416 Debuts in Los Angeles at Pre-NAB Event
ARRIFLEX 416 Debuts in Los Angeles at Pre-NAB Event During a cocktail hour and dinner event, ARRI presented the new ARRIFLEX 416 camera to over 220 members of the American Society of Cinematographers, the International Cinematographers Guild, the Society Of Camera Operators and others. The unveiling was received with much excitement and after some hands-on time, the attendees lavished the new camera with praise for its light weight, ergonomic feel and thoughtful new features.

3. The Art of Ultra 16
As part of the current rapid progress in the Super 16 film format, ARRI and Zeiss are introducing a new line of modern prime lenses designed specifically for Super 16.

4. Getting Wide Angles in Outer Space
In January of 2006 the Ultra Prime 8R began shipping, with reactions so far proving very positive. The first to use the 8R on a feature film was Alwin Kuchler, BSC (PROOF, CODE 46, THE CLAIM), lensing the science fiction film SUNSHINE for Director Danny Boyle.

5. Master Diopters
ARRI and Zeiss have re-thought the common diopter and offer a set of Master Diopters that provide considerably better optical quality and handling than regular diopters.

6. Mercedes Counts on Super 16
In the Fall of 2005, Gutsy, a young London production company, assembled 27 unique classic Mercedes cars in a studio near Stuttgart in Germany, and recorded automobile history on Super 16 film for DaimlerChrysler UK.

7. The MAX Files: The ARRIMAX Is Out There
London, Budapest, Los Angeles, New York – ARRI’s newest light, the dynamic ARRIMAX 18/12 has quite a few passport stamps, and continues to accrue frequent flier miles to date. Affectionately referred to as “MAX,” the lamp combines the variable beam spread of a Fresnel and the light output of a PAR.

8. It’s a Hit
The MaxMover is a hit first time around with the release of the beta test series in the beginning of 2006. Usually a beta test is one of the first steps on a long road to a successful product. With the new concept of an automated stirrup, ARRI Lighting made the MaxMover right on the first move.

9. ARRI CSC Contributes to IDA Dream Package and Frederick Douglass Documentary
To help filmmakers make their visions a reality, a complete package was put together that would enable production of a documentary from start to finish. The prize includes four weeks rental of a Super 16 mm camera package (including batteries, filters, tripod, zoom lens and magazines) from ARRI CSC.

10. Society Of Camera Operators Previews the D-20
The Society Of Camera Operators (SOC) received an introduction to the ARRIFLEX D-20 on Feb. 4 at the Motion Picture Retirement Home in Woodland Hills, Calif. The ARRI Burbank office annually showcases new products to the SOC, giving members a sneak peak at gear for use on future productions.

11. Technicolor Recognized for Realtime Answerprint System
Technicolor Creative Services was honored at this year's Scientific and Technical Academy Awards for its Realtime Answerprint System on Feb. 18. The company's patented light and projection system has improved the photochemical color timing process and brought a new level of precision to the interaction between filmmakers and color timers.

12. A So-Called Life: Shooting Duane Hopwood
Shot by Mauricio Rubinstein on Super 16 film with a digital intermediate, Duane Hopwood is a portrait of man who is on the brink of completely destroying his life and how he recovers before it’s too late. Rubinstein, who has shot an array of formats over the years, including the new Sony XDCAM on the Sundance Film Fest selection Puccini For Beginners, took some time to talk to us about Duane Hopwood.
